Cervical Smears

All women over the age of 25 are encouraged to have a smear test every 3 years. Our nurses and doctors Allan and Joslin can perform smears.

The results are posted to both your address and to the surgery.

Results

Negative = your smear test is normal.

Inadequate/Unsatisfactory = unsuitable for testing and has to be repeated; this occurs in 5-10% of smears.

Abnormal = occurs in 5% of smears there are changes which if ignored could become cancer in the future. The majority return to normal without treatment hence you are usually asked for a repeat smear 3 to 6 months later.
If subsequent treatment is needed, a minor procedure called colposcopy is performed by gynaecology services.
